This year Porsche is celebrating 50 years of producing the 911 with a very creative, and special song sung by all the models of the 911 throughout the past 50 years. Porsche launched the first 911 actually as the 901 F Model in 1963 at the Frankfurt IAA Motor Show. In 1964 before its’ market launch it was renamed to the 911. This spawned a generation of 911’s that made it into the hearts of car enthusiasts everywhere and created a following like none other. As the years went on Porsche released different variations of the 911 including the 911 S, 911 T & 911 E, and finally the 911 Carrera RS 2.7 which dawned the world’s first rear spoiler on a production vehicle.

The successor to the F Model was the release of the G Model 911 series. This is the first time Porsche’s engineers gave the car a thorough makeover. Its’ most noticeable changes were an increase in safety features that were needed to meet crash test standards in the United States in the early 1970s. By 1974 Porsche had hit a milestone with the release of the first 3.0 liter engine 911 with a massive spoiler that they deemed the “Turbo.” Since then Porsche and Turbo have become synonymous with each other.

As the years went on Porsche gave the 911 some much needed upgrades in the late 1980s that were available in the 964 model. These upgrades included ABS, Tiptronic, power steering and airbags, as well as a redesigned chassis with light alloy control arms and upgraded the suspension to coil springs while dispensing with the old school torsion-bar suspension.

As the 1990s came Porsche yet again went to the drawing board and gave us the most iconic of all the 911’s to date; the 993. This was the first time Porsche opted for the oval designed headlights versus the round ones of the past which allowed for the front section to be more low-slung. As a sports car it was proven to be one of the most reliable amongst all sports cars, and the 993 Turbo came with a bi-turbo engine which made it the cleanest and greenest automotive powertrain in 1995. The 993 is still the most revered 911 of them all because this is the last time Porsche ever produced the 911 with an air-cooled engine.

As the future of 911’s went to water-cooled engines and completely overhauled interiors in their 996 series, we saw the emergence of the GT2 and the GT3. These performance models began the pinnacle of the 911. With more performance upgrades to their iconic flat six engines in the 997, it became even more efficient and practical to suit driver’s individual preferences. As we move into the era of the 991 Porsche gave it a new suspension, longer wheelbase, increased tread width, larger tires and an ergonomically optimized interior.

The 911 has been one of the most iconic sports cars in automotive history, and Porsche have continued to build upon its’ legacy to make it better and better each time.
