After nearly 4 decades the Porsche 911 Targa is back and looks better than ever.

The Porsche 911 has been around for 50 years and is adored by car enthusiasts everywhere. If you don’t know much about the 911 you’d probably say that it doesn’t appear that Porsche has made many changes to it in the past 10 years. The engine is still in the rear, it’s still powered by a flat 6-cylinder engine, and it’s still got a similar shape compared to 911’s from the late 60’s. Yet there was one 911 that was a little different from the rest, the Porsche 911 Targa.

First released in 1967, the Porsche 911 Targa was the first (and only) Porsche that came with a removable roof section and still very reminiscent of the 911 Coupe. Its’ rear window wrapped all the way around to the polished alloy pillars with the signature Targa emblem distinguishing it from the rest of the 911 breeds. It was much more than a performance car. It had a certain type of character along with it that carried the 911 heritage and a ‘carpe diem’ mentality simultaneously. It wasn’t just a 911; it was the 911 meant to enjoy a Sunday afternoon of driving in the sunshine with nowhere to go. It was the ultimate expression of freedom.

In 2010 Porsche tried again with the Targa, but instead they removed signature pillars and wrap around rear window and went with a panoramic moon roof that didn’t suit it at all. Now four years later they’ve recreated the Targa the way its meant to be. And it couldn’t be more beautiful. We’re thoroughly excited to see this at the Chicago Auto Show coming up soon.
